Mission Statement of the Commission on Affordability and Cost Containment

The specific charge to the commission will include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Ask each administrative and academic unit to submit plans on how it can become more cost conscious, ferreting out waste and eliminating duplication and unnecessary expenditures;
  
• Review all units with an eye to those services and expenditures that are not essential to the academic mission of the university;
  
• Review those best practices that have been successful at benchmark universities in reducing costs;
  
• Review effective performance measures that monitor cost reduction and share those practices throughout the units;
  
• Discuss potential student learning and pedagogical design of less costly methods to deliver quality instruction;
  
• Review personnel costs and make specific recommendations for cost savings.

The commission will be delegated the authority to look at all aspects of the university's finances and will submit a report to the chancellor and the faculty cataloging its recommendations and potential cost savings.
